As I have read on a number of fantasy blogs (they know who they are), a good epic fantasy asks the reader to explore some facet of the human condition. For me, I want "Gemsinger" to focus on these: believing in yourself (the prime lesson everyone will learn in some form across the twelve books, especially Miresa), challenging expectations (something Bradlin comes to learn), and having hope and faith in one another (another lesson everyone will be learning in some form)
Mind you, this will not be lighthearted to the point chicks and bunnies are abound and the party succeeds at everything--if the story were a movie, it would likely be rated PG-13 for fantasy violence and some frightening images. But I'm still going to strive to make you smile when you conclude each book of the cycle, even though the happy ending may be a little subdued at first.
